The Drift of Christless Conservativism
One of the primary objectives of this particular blog is its goal in seeking to understand every realm of life from the foundation of a robust Christian worldview anchored in Scripture. That reality is why the blog is named The Christian Manifesto, seeing as a manifesto is literally a sovereign declaration from a king. We are trying to proclaim the biblical message of Christ the King. Throughout this blog, I have consistently critiqued the leftward movements of Critical Race Theory, radical gender ideology, and many other realms. Point being, I am not a practitioner of middleism which asserts Christianity is neither left nor right, but lukewarm.
With all of those realities being plainly stated, I have a pressing concern amongst many who label themselves conservatives. You cannot divorce conservativism from a biblical worldview, once you do, then you drift further and further away from the truth for you do not have the stable and steady anchor of Christ and His Word. I can agree with conservatives who are not Christians on many points, like when they oppose abortion, discuss problems in the political realm, and other areas. Many times I am truly grateful for their contributions, while also watchful understanding they are not robustly biblical in the entirety of their thinking. As the left continues to rage on in many societal institutions, conservatives must also define themselves more clearly, think more deeply, and act with greater precision based upon solidified beliefs. My concern, is that some swaths of conservativism are caving on many areas because they are Christless. Since they hold to vaguely conservative ideas in many realms, but are not walking in the truth of the entire counsel of God’s Word, they continue drifting. They need the Gospel of Christ and to live in light of the teaching of Scripture.
A Recent Example
Dave Rubin, a well-known BlazeTV talk show host, is a homosexual and recently announced that he and his “partner” are going to be having two babies via a surrogate, to which BlazeTV posted a hearty congratulations.1 PragerU also extended their congratulations.2 Now, there are multiple layers of issues here, one point must be made first. Just because these two companies stated congratulations to Dave Rubin does not mean everyone who works at those companies agrees with that action. For example, Allie Beth Stuckey’s podcast is distributed by BlazeTV, yet she disagrees with them on this issue. That being said, it is a clear sign of danger that two companies largely heralded as conservative are willing to congratulate homosexuals on having children through a surrogate mother. And, I believe it represents a trend that has been coming on amidst many conservative groups and is only gaining steam.
Christians holding to a biblical worldview cannot congratulate homosexuals in this way for God calls homosexuality sin, and has defined marriage as being between a man and a woman united together for life (Matthew 19:4-6, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10). Children are the overflow of blessing in the marital covenant as defined by God, therefore, because homosexuality transgresses God’s law and design for marriage, Christians must not praise anything of this sort as did PragerU and BlazeTV. Many individuals who are “conservative” politically do not hold firm to Christianity. They may agree with us in opposing abortion, fighting against CRT, and fixing economic issues, but the foundation of our worldview is different since we are standing on Christ and they are not. Therefore, they believe we can be at least somewhat “neutral” on issues like homosexuality simply saying we should “live and let live.”
How Do We Handle This Issue?
As Christians, we cannot support the redefinition of marriage, no matter who is promoting the attempt to do so. That reality necessitates that we may find ourselves in a situation where those on the left keep on with their unbiblical practices and ideas, while many on the right slip further and further away. What we need to do is to remain stable and solidified. Just because we take issue with someone on the conservative side of the aisle doesn’t mean we should change all of our beliefs and become woke leftists. No, we need to stand for what we have been tasked to do by Christ the entire time. Our objective is to honor Him in all of life by teaching the nations all that He has commanded (Matthew 28:18-20). We need to hold to a robustly Christian understanding of everything. As it pertains to marriage, we anchor our beliefs in the Word of God, not the shifting sands of the culture or political opinion. We call upon every person to repent in Christ, then go out living their life for the glory of God. If you anchor your conservative values in something other than Christ, then it is a weak foundation that cannot stand the test.
So, how do we handle this unique situation we are finding ourselves in at this moment in the conservative movement? We have an opportunity right now to show our friends how they are drifting. They would not have congratulated homosexuals on being “parents” 20 years ago, maybe not even 10 years ago. These individuals would not have praised homosexuals for parenting children which plainly shows their changing views. If you do not hold firm to the Gospel and the entire Word of God, then you literally very well may find yourself congratulating that which you would have called evil only a few years ago. While we agree on many issues, we need to call these drifting individuals to a biblical worldview showing them the necessity of Christ. The answer to the problems our society is facing is not to drift merely parroting what the left said ten years ago, but to preach Christ crucified and the entire counsel of His Word. We must no practice some sort of a neutrality where we have a “live and let live” attitude, but instead seek to be thoroughly biblical to the glory of God. Sinners need to be transformed by the Gospel message, then go out living as new creations seeking God’s glory by living according to His Word.
Undoubtedly, this trend amongst many in conservatism is concerning. Yet, we as Christians have a responsibility to stand up and tell the truth on these issues. Christ has put us here in this moment for the glory of His name. I pray that we will be faithful to proclaim the truth at all times by God’s grace!
