The Fleeting Nature of Arguments Raised Against The Knowledge of God
Many individuals have been confused by false teachers over the millennia of human history. No doubt some of the most disturbing attacks have come from liberal “theologians” who typically end up denying every cardinal doctrine of Christianity. Instead of believing in the Bible, they believe their own discernment and thinking are the ultimate authority. They reject the Holy God of the Scripture and insert a deity of their own making (see Romans 1). Launching their assault upon the work of Christ, they deny the atonement and often cast aside the resurrection. In the end, what they are left with is not Christianity but a religion of their own making tailored to fit their personal preferences.
The primary aim of the assault of these wolves is always upon the Scripture. In order to get people to go along with their schemes, they must attack the Bible itself. Ultimately, they will either call others to believe a source of authority in addition to the Bible is necessary, or a different source altogether is needed. Many individuals are captivated by these lies promoted through the means of the teachers of the world. However, it is precisely because they reject the Word of God that their arguments do not hold weight and will not last. By rejecting the divine revelation of God, they are found to be foolish, for they follow the folly of this world.
Divine Wisdom Versus Worldly Wisdom
The first part of 1 Corinthians 3:19 says, “For the wisdom of this world is folly with God.” This element of God’s wisdom versus man’s folly is seen in the first epistle to the Corinthian church. Individuals within this congregation needed to decide if they were going to serve Christ or man. Would they hold to what the world told them was wise, or would they cling to the true wisdom of God? Paul upholds the wisdom of God against the folly of the world, which is why he is despised by the leaders of the world. However, it is the wisdom of God that lasts, not the foolishness of the world. That truth is precisely why the argumentation by false teachers and liberal theologians does not hold up and have no staying power. Only divine wisdom from God has that complete authority and sufficiency.
When examining the arguments in opposition to the Bible, it always comes down to this pivotal question, will you follow God or man? The answer to the question will provide your end conclusion on this matter. If you reject the word of God, then you are left in the realm of human opinion. However, following the Bible and submitting to it is to follow God’s revelation. You are following Him and living for His glory. All attacks against the Scripture are ultimately a question of autonomy or theonomy (as demonstrated by Cornelius Van Til’s work). Will we be governed by men or by God? Because this is God’s world, and we are His creation, attacks against His authority do not last. That truth is why none of the heretical teachers attacking the Bible will be remembered for anything but heresy 2,000 years from now (dive into the example of early church heretic Pelagius).
The Choice Laid Before The Individual
Why then does it seem as though so many people are led astray by the teaching of men committed to assaulting God’s Word? We see the answer in 2 Timothy:
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. -2 Timothy 4:3-4
A proponent of liberal theology attacks the Scripture, thereby attempting to assert the opinions of men over the commandments of God. Automatically, this is appealing to the sinful flesh. It tickles the ears of individuals to see a teacher telling them they must be the ultimate judge of what is true. But, this “doctrine” is a gross lie of the world. To reject the Scripture is to engross yourself in foolishness. You are left with no way to know God, no understanding of the salvific Gospel, no place for objective truth and morality. Ultimately you have rejected true knowledge and wisdom itself. In the eyes of the world, you will be applauded because you have rejected the wisdom of God, which they too despise. Yet, you have ultimately rejected the only true wisdom, for that alone comes from God.
Therefore, you have a choice, will you be counted a fool by the world for Christ’s sake, or will you run with the world and suffer the judgment of Christ? The arguments of liberal theologians do not stand for they attack the Word of the Lord Himself. Do not be taken captive by arguments against the text of Scripture. They are nothing but the foolishness of the world. Stand with the true wisdom of God. It is perfect and pure. All of His ways are holy and just. Find redemption in the Gospel of Jesus Christ revealed in the Scripture. Walk in the paths He has commanded in His Word, and you will be counted as a faithful steward working for the glory of your Master!
