Lies, Lies, And More Lies
One of the intriguing developments in our American society is how many lies are being told in the mainstream. Some of these falsehoods are propagated by individuals intentionally bent on preventing the public from knowing the truth, so they can accomplish their own agendas. Different leaders promote the lies because they fail to think critically and thus end up believing what is erroneous instead of what is true. Yet, even other people in powerful positions merely go along with the lies because it will further their careers. Whatever the motivation, the lie continues and unfortunately is believed by many.
An example of these falsehoods is found in White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki’s recent comments labeling the Republican party as the ones who desire to defund the police.1 She professed the reason for this remark was simply because the Republicans opposed President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which she claims would have given the $350 billion to local governments that could have been used for police. Of course, we need to remember it is truthfully Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who want to defund the police and have sought to do so.2
Republicans opposed the American Rescue Plan for multiple good reasons, not to attempt an assault upon the officers protecting this country. Senator Josh Hawley called out the bill for funding abortion providers, while Senator Roy Blunt criticized the bill for allocating billions of dollars towards things that have nothing to do with the intended purpose of the bill.3 Many of these sorts of bills have a supposed major theme, yet they go in several directions with various agendas at play. Press Secretary Psaki seems to have forgotten about the reason Republicans did not approve of this bill. Yet, if you look at the mainstream media, many of them are up in arms over Republicans who are now being accused of seeking to defund the police. In his Leftist handbook, Rules For Radicals, Saul Alinsky said the following, “Accuse your opponent of what you are doing, to create confusion and to inculcate voters against evidence of your own guilt.” Indeed, the strategy seems to be working quite nicely for the Democrats at the moment.
How Do We Reject The Lies?
My main point is not to talk about the Defund the Police movement. Rather, I want to ask the question how do we survive in a culture of lies? Right now, we are being told to accept ideas which are blatantly against reality. We are commanded to believe men can become women, women can become men. If you dare to suggest a white person is not always racist and a black person is not always innocent of racism, then you will be immediately excommunicated. Perhaps you have the common sense to believe that 2+2=4, yet that too is an offense in our day. Indeed, reality itself is under attack by lies.
Living in a culture of lies is going to require something, and it is a commitment to truth. You have to be tethered to biblical teaching. It is imperative for every single person to analyze everything, and I do mean everything, through a biblical lens to see accurately. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn said the following, “And therein we find, neglected by us, the simplest, the most accessible key to our liberation: a personal nonparticipation in lies! Even if all is covered by lies, even if all is under their rule, let us resist in the smallest way: Let their rule hold not through me!”4
The key insight by Solzhenitsyn is for us to resist tyranny by refusing to live by lies. We must live by the truth. Our fate is not yet the same as Soviet Russia. Individuals should strive not only to not live by lies but also to speak the truth. First, you must learn to reject the lies and hold fast to the truth. If you are deceived, you will not be able to proclaim truth. However, if you commit to knowing the biblical worldview, shunning the lies around you, then you will learn to speak the truth.
A Call To Action
Here is the fundamental question for us to ask and answer, will we live by lies or by truth? The normal person, like you and I, will not be able to wake up tomorrow and influence dramatic changes in our culture. However, we can commit to live by truth and repudiate the lies. If every single one of us took this step, it would be a drastically different nation. Our individual commitment to live by the truth anchored in Scripture in all realms of life would produce shockwaves in society the likes of which may have never been seen previously.
When you read a news article, social media post, or any other medium of communication, make a determination to discern what you read and not just blindly believe it. If you hear an expert talking about a subject, logically analyze what they say and see if it is true or false. The news reports given to you by your friends must also be filtered. You should check the facts and see if they are true. Read the Bible, learn its contents so you can live a life grounded in divine truth which is most important. Think critically, pursue truth, and have the courage to live, not by lies.
