Dear American Citizens,
I am writing to you this day because of my grave concern on a few pertinent topics. First of all, I am deeply saddened by the anger and hostility in our nation. I grew up in a culture where a person could disagree with another and then go buy their lunch while debating the issue. My concern is not with people holding firm to their well-thought-out beliefs, that trait is most commendable. The issue I have is that people no longer hold to the principles of truth and respect. We have our opinions but do not ultimately ask for the truth lest we find we are actually wrong. We excel at sharing our personal thoughts with great vigor but are poor when it comes to respecting others by treating them with basic human dignity.
One person says wearing masks is an excellent action for combatting COVID. The other believes this step is completely ridiculous. Far too often both sides just scream at each other, and neither actually wants to know the truth on the subject. Gone are the days when we could sit down and discuss the facts of the matter. The time when we could disagree on a subject and still honor each other’s humanity flew by years ago. Now, we only quote political opinions and our favorite leaders instead of engaging in robust analysis and skillful conversation. He who wins the difference of opinion is the one who can remember the most quotes and not the most facts. Expert opinion trumps credible facts in our current society even if the “experts” disagree with the truth. For this reason, we cannot dialogue in the manner by which our ancestors did and actually get to the heart of a subject.
The second area I wish to touch on in this post is the grave matter of priorities. My dear Americans do you realize we are fighting over Dr. Seuss and Mr. Potato Head while communism is advancing across the world? Do you understand that we have been greatly blessed in this country and we should use those blessings for the benefit of others? Instead of fighting over trivial matters like plastic potatoes, might I suggest we direct our attention to subjects like the labor camps of Communist China? People are losing their lives in that nation, we must be ready to stand for freedom and truth. But, here we are battling over the ever so deadly Dr. Seuss and the menacing potato heads. It is going to be hard to stand as a torch for freedom to the world when we do not prioritize ourselves rightly.
My fellow Americans might I also suggest we drop the practice of name-calling and actually learn to make constructive arguments again? Just because you disagree with me on one issue does not mean I am going to call you a “Marxist” who wants to destroy the country. I should hope you would not call me a “conspiracy theorist” merely due to my holding of an opinion with which you disagree. If I am wrong, then take your best shot at refuting my viewpoint. Use evidence, reason, logic, and truth to show me my error. I will be better for it and learn many things in the process. Developing robust lines of argumentation will serve us much better than engaging in hateful arguments!
I only have two more suggestions to give the people of my country. Please pay close attention, as they are most important. First of all, I contend we should hold our heads high because of the great heritage we have in this land. Our nation has made many mistakes, we are not perfect, none of our ancestors were 100% correct at all times in all places. However, the men and women who have stood for freedom throughout the history of this land should be applauded. Our founding fathers separated from Britain in a moment of great courage. Can you honestly say that Patrick Henry’s famous line “give me liberty or give me death” does not stir conviction in your soul? Does not George Washington’s selfless leadership inspire you to labor for the good of others? Just like all countries, our nation’s heritage is not perfect. We engaged in the despicable practice of slavery. We did not always treat the Native Americans correctly. But, by the grace of God, we fixed these issues in our nation. America no longer enslaves people during this day. Let us learn from the failures of our past and thank God for the successes we have accomplished. May we be humbled to stand in the line of great men and women while never being so star-struck as to not learn from their failure.
The most important thing I have to say to my fellow Americans is that this country has largely forgotten God. We were “created” with inalienable rights. Our ancestors recognized God as the One who has blessed us with freedom. I do not mean God, in a general sense, I mean God as in the Christian God. The Bible is His revealed Word, yet we have banned it from our schools. We no longer seek to be one nation under God, but one nation under man. As one nation under God, we were a torch for freedom and liberty across the globe. By becoming one nation under man we are quickly watching our freedom die because we do not know what it is nor who gives it to us. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to die that we might be freed from sin and live for the glory of God. Galatians 5:1 says, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” I urge you my fellow Americans remember the God of the universe and bow before the Lord Jesus Christ. Eternal freedom is found in Him. Earthly freedom is given to humans by the God of the universe.
So, where does this leave me after writing this “open letter” to my fellow Americans? One side will label me an “extremist” because I came across as too conservative. The other will consider me far too “religious” because I discussed biblical Christianity in this post without apology. In so doing each group proves my point. The United States of America is no longer united but divided. We are divided because we consider Seuss a greater threat than Jinping. Those who disagree with us must be eliminated because we do not want to put the effort into developing an argument to refute them. Many individuals are more concerned about digging up failures in America’s past than building its future through fixing our current errors. Lastly, we are a divided nation because we have elevated man above God. Wake up my fellow Americans, the gift of freedom has been given to you, but it is ever so elusive. If you fail to take responsibility your kids and grandkids will never taste the sweetness of liberty. Our sons and daughters will not know what it means to worship God in a society free from tyranny. The chains of slavery will be fastened upon them because their ancestors gave them over to new evil masters. Wake up America, your future depends on it!
Signed,
A Freedom-Loving Christian Patriot
