HEADLINE: The Death of Freedom Applauded by Freedom Loving Americans

The Headline of Our Future

The media of the future released the article and talked about the story on all their digital mediums. Most Americans loved the story, but they thought the title was a bit perplexing. It was entitled “HEADLINE: The Death of Freedom Applauded by Freedom Loving Americans” and sounded a bit unusual to these self-proclaimed patriots. Nonetheless, freedom had died in America, the media was reporting with accuracy on this point. But, why did freedom die you ask? Freedom in America did not die because of an invasion by a foreign army. It did not die because the citizens of this fine nation stopped proclaiming their love of “freedom” with resounding emphasis. Rather, it died because no one knew what it was nor how to live as a free person. True freedom died to the resounding applause of those who claimed to love it, but did not know how to define it and so they did not know how to protect it.

The article of the future will report that Americans no longer understood freedom as their founding fathers did. Freedom no longer meant the right to do what is moral before God, to be free from oppressive government, and to pursue life with joy, gladness, and vigor. The concept of freedom had changed. Instead of viewing men as being endowed with equal rights from God, Americans now understood some inherently have greater privilege than others. Some folks need to “perform penance” to others because of sins committed by their ancestors hundreds of years ago. Instead of being free from government intervention, Americans now understand the government needs to keep us “safe” from supposed “harm.” Freedom is thus now viewed as freedom from “danger” even if that means the government controls every aspect of life. Of course, those individuals who hold to traditional freedom as grounded in God must be gotten rid of, because their views might “incite violence” or possibly even “offend” someone. Consequently, Americans believed freedom meant the jettisoning of any idea which disagreed with this new definition. If that means some must be imprisoned or killed for holding to the old ways then so be it, but this new “freedom” must be protected.

Changing Beliefs and Terms

How do you destroy a superpower which believes in liberty and justice for all? You do not outright invade it with military force, because it is a superpower and would destroy you. Another option would be to try to change the viewpoint of society from capitalism to socialism, from a constitutional democratic republic to communism. However, that would not do either, a country that has fought wars against communism won’t fall prey to it if you start using that term outright. You see, what you have to do is redefine the beliefs and terms which historically made that nation great.

If you can change the dominant worldview from Christianity to a belief in a godless chance-based world, then there is no standard for anything. Once you have successfully undermined that area, then there is no ultimate basis for values such as freedom, liberty, and ethical duty. These terms are now open to be defined however the society wishes. Thus, if you undermine the nation’s belief in God, then you can undermine their belief in freedom by substituting a different definition for freedom. At this point, you can cloak Marxist, Leftist ideas with traditional terms that have had their meanings changed. No one will be able to stand up for freedom against tyranny because they believe the tyrants are promoting freedom under this new definition. No one will choose to suffer inconvenience at the expense of pleasure because they do not believe God exists so their chief aim is pleasure and not to please God. It is the perfect storm to undermine a superpower that was traditionally based on freedom as defined by God.

Is The End Result Inevitable?

The question we are all asking is how do we get ourselves out of this mess? Is the “Headline of Our Future” inevitable or is it possible to avoid it? You will not win this battle by merely electing the right candidates, that step is important, but it is not the ultimate means by which we avoid the headline of the future. Victory will not come by getting rid of cancel culture, big tech tyranny, or anything of that sort. Those battles need to be faced, but they are specific areas of the battlefield, and only winning one or two victories there will not win you the entire war. No, the only way to avoid this future headline is for men and women to come to Christ for salvation and seek to glorify Him in all of life. A robust biblical worldview must be brought to bear on all points of life. The need of the hour is for the Gospel to go out, sinners to be saved, the Scripture to be taught, and the worldview of the nation to return to its Christian heritage.

Men and women need to see their duty before God. They must see the proper role of government and the truth of freedom biblically defined. It is imperative they value ethical duty over pleasure and focus on living with the purpose of the praise and glory of God. Anything less than a full Reformation will not work. Christians yet again must see God’s call upon them to proclaim the Gospel and make disciples for Christ. This involves not only Gospel proclamation but worldview training from Scripture so that disciples are enabled to live all of life for God’s glory. Christians need to engage the public and political spheres with biblical truth. Once this happens people will understand areas such as freedom, morality, liberty, and so on are grounded in God not blind chance. They will not be willing to give up their freedom to a tyrannical state in the name of a false security. Instead, they will value the freedom given to them by God using it for His glory and keeping it for their future posterity. The need of the hour is men and women who will stand up and live with a fully developed Christian worldview. Will you and I be such individuals? Or, will we applaud the death of freedom while proclaiming to love it?
